Cosmos is busy with his homemade puzzle feeder while I reward Squidge for remaining calm.

Until you have given your cat many opportunities to be in the same room as the dog, it is advisable to keep the animals in their own parts of the house when you are not able to supervise. Once your dog and cat have been in the same room many times, with both seeming calm and relaxed, you can let the dog investigate the cat’s part of the home. Do this first of all with the dog on the house line, and if all is well, subsequent investigations can be unrestricted (though still supervised). If both dog and cat appear calm and relaxed, you can leave the barrier separating the two areas of the home open. If you decide to have a permanent cat-only room, this should always be out of bounds for the dog. Even if cat and dog become the best of friends, do not be tempted to remove some of the cat’s safe places and hidey-holes—these may be the foundations of such a good friendship. As dog and cat integrate, you may wish to spread both the cat’s and the dog’s belongings throughout the house—this should be no problem for them as long as it is done gradually and several belonging to the cat are kept in places the dog cannot reach.
